Day 1

Dar es Salaam → Nyerere (Selous)

Meet your departure arrangements in Dar es Salaam and check in for the bush flight to Nyerere, the southern wilderness often still referred to as Selous. Your team confirms the flight time and airport meeting instructions before travel; this itinerary begins in Dar rather than Arusha. On landing at the bush airstrip, meet your camp guide and continue into the landscape, watching for animals wherever the transfer follows permitted wildlife routes. Settle into camp, enjoy lunch as the flight schedule allows and head out for an afternoon game drive. You may encounter giraffes moving between trees, elephants near water or impala in the open woodland. Return for dinner as the light fades and the sounds of the bush take over.

Nyerere National Park protects part of the wider Selous ecosystem, with the Rufiji River and associated lakes giving the landscape a different character from Tanzania's northern plains. Water, woodland and open areas support a wide range of wildlife, but the park's scale means patience is essential. The broadly dry months from June to October often make wildlife easier to locate near water, while rains can affect tracks and camp operations. Pack in soft-sided luggage according to your bush-flight allowance, and keep binoculars accessible for your first afternoon rather than buried in your main bag.

Day 2

Nyerere

Start early for a guided walking safari, following a safety briefing from your guide and armed ranger. Moving quietly on foot brings the smaller details into focus: tracks in sand, bird calls, seed cases and signs of animals that passed during the night. The team chooses the route according to wildlife and ground conditions, and the walk is about understanding the bush rather than seeking close encounters. Return for breakfast and time to relax, with lunch at camp before your boat safari. Later, explore an authorised section of the Rufiji river system, watching from the boat for hippos, crocodiles and birds along the banks. Activity order may change with water levels and local conditions. Return to camp for dinner.

A Nyerere boat safari adds a perspective that road travel cannot offer, showing how wildlife uses banks, channels and quiet stretches of water. Hippos may spend much of the day submerged, while kingfishers and fish eagles can draw your eye above the surface. Boat routes depend on safe water levels and operating permissions, particularly as seasons change. Wear closed shoes and muted clothing for the walk, then keep a hat and sun protection ready for the water. Follow the ranger's instructions on foot and the boat guide's seating advice; neither activity is an opportunity to approach wildlife independently.

Day 3

Nyerere → Ruaha

Have breakfast and transfer to the airstrip for your cross-park bush flight to Ruaha. The exact departure and any intermediate stops depend on the operating schedule, so your guide will confirm how much time is available before leaving camp. From above, southern Tanzania's changing textures begin to show, with woodland and river courses giving way to the drier landscapes around Ruaha. Your new camp team meets you on arrival and takes you towards your accommodation, with wildlife watching along permitted routes. Lunch and a short rest fit around the flight timing, followed by an afternoon drive if the schedule allows. Dinner introduces another quiet camp evening, now among Ruaha's baobabs, rocky outcrops and broad skies.

Ruaha National Park is known for rugged scenery, baobab-studded country and its important river habitats. It lies where different vegetation zones meet, helping create an interesting mixture of wildlife and birds. Elephants, greater kudu and lions are among the animals you may encounter, but none is guaranteed on a particular drive. Dry-season conditions often concentrate activity around remaining water, while greener months change both the scenery and access. Keep a light layer in your cabin bag because small-aircraft journeys and early transfers can feel cool. Recheck luggage limits before this connection rather than assume they match your international flight.

Day 4

Ruaha

Set out after an early breakfast for a full day exploring Ruaha with your guide. The route follows recent wildlife activity, road conditions and your interests, perhaps moving between river country, baobab woodland and rocky slopes. Pause to watch elephants feeding or antelope picking their way through cover, and take time over any predator sighting rather than expecting constant action. Your guide may read tracks or explain why a particular stretch of shade deserves a second look. A picnic lunch allows you to stay out without hurrying back to camp. Towards evening, enjoy a sundowner at a permitted viewpoint near a rocky outcrop, keeping safely within your guide's instructions, before returning for dinner.

Ruaha's landscape is part of the experience, not simply a backdrop for animals. The Great Ruaha River and other water sources influence wildlife movements, especially as the dry season progresses. Lions are a major attraction, although pride sizes and locations change and a day can pass without seeing them. June to October is broadly dry, with vegetation often thinning later in the season; wetter periods bring green growth and attractive birdlife but may limit some routes. Bring binoculars for distant hillsides and a warm layer for the drive home. Rocky viewpoints are only used where access and safety rules permit.

Day 5

Ruaha

Leave early for a morning focused on Ruaha's lions, using your guide's knowledge of recent sightings, tracks and suitable habitat. This is patient searching from the vehicle, not a promise of finding a pride or approaching animals on foot. You might instead find elephants crossing a riverbed, a kudu in woodland or birds gathering around a remaining pool. Return for lunch and a rest before a walking safari in a suitable cooler part of the day, accompanied by a qualified guide and armed ranger. The team decides the walking route after checking local conditions and may adjust the order of activities for safety. Back at camp, enjoy dinner and a final evening listening to the sounds beyond the tents.

A Ruaha walking safari reveals the bush at a different scale from a game drive. Tracks, droppings, plants and insect activity can explain how animals use the landscape even when they remain out of sight. Walks are subject to permissions, weather and wildlife movements, and they are never designed as close approaches to lions. Wear closed walking shoes, long lightweight trousers and subdued colours; carry water and stay close to your guide. The heat can build quickly in the dry season, so a shorter, carefully timed walk is often more rewarding than a longer midday outing.

Day 6

Ruaha → Dar

Enjoy breakfast before the transfer to Ruaha's airstrip for your bush flight back to Dar es Salaam. If the flight timing allows, your journey out may include a little final wildlife watching along the permitted route, but it is best not to promise a separate game drive on a departure morning. Say goodbye to the camp team and keep your travel documents, valuables and essential medication with you in the cabin bag. The flight carries you away from the park's baobabs and river country towards Tanzania's coast, with any intermediate stops determined by the service. On arrival in Dar es Salaam, your southern safari ends. Allow a comfortable connection if you are continuing on an evening flight or another onward journey.

Dar es Salaam is the transport hub for this southern Tanzania safari, not Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport. Bush services and onward airlines may use different terminals or require additional ground arrangements, so confirm the arrival details and connection plan before booking a tight turnaround. Delays can occur with weather and operational changes, making extra time especially valuable before an international departure. Keep a clean shirt and lightweight layer in your hand luggage for the transition from dusty park tracks to the airport. You finish with memories of two contrasting wilderness areas linked by air rather than long road transfers.
