Day 1

Arusha to Miriakamba Hut — walking with wildlife

After breakfast at your Arusha hotel, we collect you for the drive of about an hour to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, at about 1,500 m. Here you meet your mountain crew and the armed park ranger who accompanies the walk. Setting off across open grassland, you may see giraffe, buffalo, zebra or warthog before the path enters montane forest. Your guide sets a steady pace, with time to notice the giant fig tree arch, a waterfall and, with luck, colobus monkeys moving through the canopy. You stop for lunch along the way and reach Miriakamba Hut, at about 2,514 m, after about four to five hours of walking. Settle into your hut, enjoy views towards the Momella Lakes when skies allow, and sit down to dinner prepared by your mountain cook.

A Mount Meru trek begins unusually close to wildlife, making the ranger an essential part of the team rather than an optional extra. Stay together and follow instructions around animals, especially buffalo. The lower slopes can feel humid even when the higher mountain looks clear; keep a waterproof layer accessible rather than buried in your porter bag. Walking slowly from the first afternoon helps you adjust to the increasing altitude.

Day 2

Miriakamba to Saddle Hut — and up Little Meru

After breakfast at Miriakamba Hut, you begin the steeper climb towards Saddle Hut. The trail winds through forest draped in moss and old man’s beard, opening gradually as you gain height. Your guide keeps the pace measured, with pauses to drink and catch your breath rather than rushing the ascent. About three to four hours of walking brings you to Saddle Hut, at about 3,570 m, between the main mountain and Little Meru. After lunch and a rest, you head towards Little Meru, at about 3,820 m, for an acclimatisation walk if you feel well and conditions allow. Meru’s crater wall dominates the view, while clear skies may reveal Kilimanjaro above the clouds. Return for an early dinner, a summit briefing and a short night in the hut.

This stage of the Mount Meru climb is about adjustment as much as distance. The change from sheltered forest to open high ground brings cooler air and stronger sun, so carry both warm layers and sun protection. Tell your guide promptly about headache, nausea or unusual fatigue; an acclimatisation walk does not remove altitude risk. Before bed, organise your head torch, spare batteries, gloves and drinking water so the early start feels calm rather than hurried.

Day 3

Summit day — Socialist Peak, then down to Miriakamba

Your summit attempt starts in the early hours, with head torches lighting the climb from Saddle Hut towards Rhino Point. Beyond it, the route follows Meru’s narrow, exposed crater rim, where your guide sets a careful pace. If the weather and your condition permit, you reach Socialist Peak, at about 4,566 m, around sunrise. Take in the ash cone deep inside the crater and, on a clear morning, Kilimanjaro across the horizon before beginning the return. Breakfast and a rest await at Saddle Hut, followed by the descent towards Miriakamba Hut. Pause for lunch during the day and let the walking rhythm ease as the forest returns. After about ten to twelve hours of walking overall, dinner and a proper night in your hut feel especially welcome.

The four-day Mount Meru trek gives you a night on the lower mountain after the summit rather than requiring an immediate descent to the gate. That helps divide the physical effort, although the exposed ridge and altitude still make this a serious climb. Tell your guide immediately if you feel unwell, and accept a turnaround when safety requires it. Keep your camera secured on the ridge and stop in a safe place for photographs; balance and warm hands are more important than capturing every view.

Day 4

Miriakamba to Momella Gate — back to Arusha

After a well-earned sleep and breakfast at Miriakamba Hut, you shoulder your daypack for the final walk to Momella Gate. About two to three hours of descent takes you through cool forest and out towards open grassland, with your ranger still accompanying the group. This is a chance to notice details missed on the climb: bird calls, changing vegetation and perhaps giraffe, buffalo or baboons at a safe distance. There is no need to hurry simply because the summit is behind you. At the gate, sign out, collect your certificate and thank the mountain crew before the drive of about an hour to your Arusha hotel. You return around lunchtime, with lunch marking the end of the trek and a hot shower within easy reach.

Arusha National Park protects the forested slopes that make this final stage so different from Meru’s bare summit ridge. Continue following the ranger’s directions around wildlife and keep your boots on until the walking is finished. If a Kilimanjaro climb comes next, time on Mount Meru can support acclimatisation, but it does not guarantee freedom from altitude illness. Take recovery seriously: drink regularly, eat well and tell your next mountain guide how you felt at altitude, not just whether you reached the top.
