Mahale feels like the end of the world in the best possible way. A chain of forested mountains drops straight into the clear blue water of Lake Tanganyika, with white-sand beaches below and no roads at all. Most guests arrive by small plane, then by boat.

Discover Mahale Mountains National Park

The park is famous for its wild chimpanzees. One community has been studied by researchers since the 1960s and is used to people, so guided treks have a very good chance of close, unhurried sightings.

Days follow a simple rhythm: a morning forest trek to find the chimps, a lazy afternoon swimming or kayaking on the lake, and sunset dhow trips with the mountains glowing behind you.

Because it is so remote, Mahale is best as a special add-on. It combines beautifully with the big-game plains of Katavi, a short flight away.

Wildlife in Mahale Mountains National Park

  • Wild chimpanzees
  • Red colobus, red-tailed and blue monkeys
  • Yellow baboons
  • Forest birds and kingfishers
  • Leopard (rarely seen)
  • Cichlid fish in Lake Tanganyika

Every drive is different — sightings are never guaranteed, and your guide reads the bush as you go.
