A high mountain plateau known locally as 'God's Garden' — wild orchids and flowers stretching to the horizon in the southern highlands.

Kitulo is unlike any other park in Tanzania. Instead of big game, it protects a high, rolling plateau in the southern highlands that bursts into colour during the rains. Local people call it 'Bustani ya Mungu' — God's Garden.

Discover Kitulo National Park

In the flower season the grassland is covered in orchids, red-hot pokers, lilies, aloes and proteas, many of them rare. Botanists, photographers and keen walkers come from around the world to see it.

The plateau sits high up, so days are fresh and nights are cold. Walking is the best way to explore: across open moorland, to quiet streams and waterfalls, and up to viewpoints over the mountains of the southern highlands.

Kitulo is remote and best for travellers who love nature, flowers and walking. We usually combine it with the Mbeya area, Ruaha, or a wider southern Tanzania journey.

Bring warm layers and a rain jacket even in summer — the plateau is high, the weather changes fast and mornings can be close to freezing.

How long to stay? One or two nights in the Mbeya area or near the park, with a full day on the plateau.
